Trisomie 21 standen für ein atmosphärisches Geflecht aus Vintage-Keyboards, New Wave-Bassläufen und diesem merkwürdig, sperrigen Gesang. 1997 schien dann das Kapitel Trisomie 21 endgültig vorbei zu sein. Doch mit „Happy Mystery Child" (Le Maquis) meldeten sich die Franzosen 2004 zurück, um wenig später mit „The Man is a mix" noch eine 3-fach Remix-CD nachzulegen.
Bereits seit 1980 sind die Gebrüder Phillippe und Hervé Lomprez mit ihrer Band Trisomie 21 aktiv. Während Phillippe für den Gesang zuständig ist, schreibt Hervé die Musik und die meisten Texte. Cold Wave nannte man den Stil der Band und im Laufe der Jahre gelangen T21 mit Songs wie „Jakarta", „The Last Song" oder „A New Outset" eine Reihe von Club-Hits. Extravagant waren auch die Live-Auftritte, bei denen synthetische Klangimpressionen vor dem Hintergrund weißer Schleiervorhänge (oder auch ganz hinter den Vorhängen...) und Neoröhren dargeboten wurden. Zum Selbstverständnis der Band ein Zitat aus einem altem Presseinfo von 1989: „Die Vorstellung schwitzender, bärtiger Gitarrenhelden ist uns äußerst unsympatisch". Gut so!
Mit dem bisher letzten Album „Gohokako" (1997) setzten Trisomie 21 ihre Entwicklung vom New Wave und Elektro früher Tage in Richtung Ambient fort, der mit "Plays the Pictures" 1990 begann. Auf „Gohokako" wurde mit Ethno-Einflüssen gespielt, die den ohnehin schon sehr einfühlsamen Kompositionen noch mehr Farbe und Wärme verliehen.
Doch zurück in die Gegenwart: „Happy Mystery Child" ist ein Album, das raue Gitarren, moderne Rhythmen und Cure-ähnliche melancholische Melodien („She died for Love") vereint. Songtitel wie „Forsaken Mysteries", „Come in Paradise" und „The Touch of any Flame" lassen bereits die vielfältigste Bilder im Kopf entstehen und werden dabei von T21 musikalisch auf beeindruckende Weise umgesetzt. Das Album kommt einem angenehm vertraut vor, ohne ein billiger Abklatsch der eigenen Musik zu sein. Vielmehr wurden die typischen Elemente von T21 geschickt in das Gerüst moderner Elektronik integriert. Das Ergebnis ist nicht mehr die Sperrspitze in Sachen Innovation, aber es hat dieses entspannt abgeklärte von gelungenen Spätwerken. Ich schaffe es sogar meine Frieden mit der Stimme von Sänger Phillipe zu machen, die diesmal gar nicht so unharmonisch wirkt und gut zur Musik passt.
Eine Überraschung ist auch das Experiment der 3fach Remix-CD „The Man is a mix" (enthält neben einer Doppel-CD mit Remixen auch „Happy Mystery Child"). Meine Befürchtung, dass sich wieder die üblichen Verdächtigen aus der Future-Pop-Ecke auf dem Album finden werden, trifft zum Glück nicht zu. Neben mir bislang unbekannten Remixern konnten sich auch Größen wie The Hacker (unglaublicher Mix von „No search for us"), Psyche, David Carretta und Paul Kendall an den Songs von „Happy Mystery Child" auslassen. Die Mehrzahl der Künstler kommt aus Frankreich, so dass man einen guten Überblick über die dortige Elektroszene bekommt und sich die Musik sehr abwechslungsreich gestaltet. Coole Sache und ganz ohne langweiliges verzetteln im Mix-Gefrickel.

What have you done during the last years? New stuff is released quite irregularly?
T21 (Philippe Lomprez):
In 1997 the last T21´s album is born called „Gohohako". This album close our history with the label Pias (Play it again sam), but since this time we have to wait about the end of our contract. The silence was imposed, but now we are free!
We have collaborated in a fashion project with "Kenzo" and with the French radio "fun" (Anm. d. Red.: Teilnahme mit dem Seitenprojekt Process of composition an der "fun Radio" Compilation "Ballade Nocturne Vol.2 u.a. mit Moby, Massive Attack...). We have done a remix for a great French band called „Indochine".
Are you satisfied with the reactions for your new album „Happy mystery child"?
T21:
The reactions for our album „Happy mystery child" are good. For us T21 it’s now and HMC is the most important event for us. We like it, it’s perhaps the most valuable album, we try to say something to everyone. We are proud of the public’s reactions.
How did the project for the triple-CD "The man is a mix" start and who has chosen the remixers/artists?
T21:
"The man is a mix" is a link between two styles, two worlds: the electro dark underground and us – it’s an experience. The electro dark music remembered us to the spirit of our beginning in 1980. There is an economic crisis with the music now, but artistically the experimental scene is strong. Our friend Olivier Lechevestrier, who is also our manager, had the project-idea at the beginning of "Happy mystery child". He proposed us a few names and we choose together. It’s our dream team, we want together all people, because music is not a religion, it’s human being, listen to David Caretta, The Hacker, Electric Indigo, Sylvie Marks, Psyche etc...
This year you play in Germany at April the 29th in Karlsruhe and at the Mera´Luna Festival. What’s your LIVE set-up and can we await?
T21:
The 29th in Karlsruhe, it’s or first set in Germany and it’s very important for us; we have a lot of respect for the public, but we are not a "showband". I hope you won’t await a big show. We are simply playing our music, the stage is an answer to a request of our public.
Your music and your voice often create a sad atmosphere. How can you explain this and what are your inspirations?
T21:
The only thing I know: we don’t cheat, we try to be calm and conscious, we don’t like code and fitness. The basic of our music is our vision of the world, we take a look around us. Our music is elaborate and reflected, sometimes complicated like a wing machine. We weave our reality.
Did you have any problems in the past concerning your "Trisomie 21". I’m asking, because there are also releases under the shortened name T21.
T21:
Just at the beginning; T21 is a deficiency with the chromosome 21. They are human like us, but different, very sensitive. A few specialists thought that they are capable to be artists and if they can be musicians, they probably create a new style, a new vision of the music. We agree and found this idea very strong and so we choose the name. Where is the problem? T21 or Trisomie 21, it´s the same thing.
What’s your opinion about the music scene in France.... You have got a quote for French music on radio and in Germany there are also discussions on that topic. What’s your opinion about that and the idea behind it?
T21:
The underground scene in France is alive and still good, but there are economic problems with the music, like all over the world I think. We are not musicians with a real political message. But it´s important to be critical with the power, the truth and history. Politics have not a real project for us, they don’t know how doing something for this society, the world is changing, all we must change.
In France we have a quote for French music, but we hate this idea. The quality is not better now; money takes always the same way. We are suspicious about politics!
